West Brom manager Steve Clarke has confirmed that former Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka will miss the match against his former club due to an injury. Anelka played for Chelsea for three seasons following his £ 15 million move from Bolton Wanderers. During this period, he also won the Golden Boot award and several other titles including the Premier league title. He narrowly missed out on the Champions league title, as the club won this a few months after his departure. Over the years, Anelka has played for several clubs in various countries, but it is widely regarded that he produced his best spell at Chelsea.
He did not have a chance to say goodbye to the Chelsea fans, but he was expected to get an opportunity on Saturday when West Brom are playing against the West London outfit. Anelka recently returned to the Premier league after signing a one-year deal with West Brom. It has been able to tide over the absence of Romelu Lukaku spent the last season on loan from Chelsea. Anelka, though, will miss the match due to a groin problem according to Clarke, who also says that former blue Scott Sinclair will also be a casualty.
In his absence, Clarke is likely to use Shane Long to play against John Terry and Gary Cahill.
“Scott has done a little bit of training this week, but if I’m being honest I think this game is going to come a little bit too early. He’s working well and we will assess him again tomorrow. He’s had three hard days with the team and we’ll see how he reacts and make a decision on whether he travels. For the starting XI it will be too early. Victor is fine. The only one that’s doubtful from the normal squad is Nicolas,” said Clarke.

West Brom defender Liam Ridgewell has said that he expects Shane long and Nicolas Anelka to strike a good partnership in the coming season. The club recently completed the signing of former Chelsea and Bolton striker Nicolas Anelka on a free transfer. The striker has signed a one-year contract with the club. Despite coming to the end of his career, many believe that Anelka can still score the goals in the league. This is going to be an especially tough season for West Brom because they have to do without the goals from Romelu Lukaku this season.
The Chelsea striker has returned to his parent club and he scored 17 goals in an incredible campaign last time around. Manager Steve Clark admitted at the start of the season that replacing Lukaku’s goals will be the big target for the club. They will be hoping that Anelka does the job. The 34-year-old is a proven Premier league goalscorer and he has more than 100 Premier league goals to his name. Even though he has played for several clubs like Liverpool, Manchester city, Bolton, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Real Madrid, he has managed to score goals wherever he has gone.
Long has also been very good player for West Brom since his move from Reading.
“I’m sure Shane will be looking forward to it. Him and Shane together could be frightening. I wouldn’t want to be defending with those two running at me. As a pairing I’m sure they’ll be very good for us. It will be good to have all the boys together for a few days. It helps to gel as a team and a squad if you’re all away together for pre-season. We just can’t wait to get started,” said the defender ahead of the new season. West Brom kick off the campaign with a home match against Southampton.

Juventus have still not given up hope of signing Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain despite reports suggesting that he may have already agreed with Arsenal. According to the general director of the club Giuseppe Marotta, club are still in discussions with Real Madrid over the sale of Higuain, who has become one of the sought-after strikers in Europe. Even though he has scored several goals for the Spanish club on a consistent basis, he has been a regular understudy to Karim Benzema. The 25-year-old is of the opinion that his international chances with the Argentina national team may be hurt ahead of the 2014 World Cup.
As a result, he wants to move to a club where he can play regularly. Juventus is one of the options for the Argentine striker, who has been at Real Madrid since 2006. Even though Juventus have been the domestic champions in the last two seasons, their strikeforce is certainly not one of the best in Europe. As a result, they have not been able to make significant inroads when it comes to the Champions League. After back-to-back titles, Juventus manager Antonio Conte has made success in the Champions League his main priority. As a result, they are after the striker who can score a lot of goals and Higuain is amongst the transfer targets.
“Higuain? I do not want to say anything because there is still so much time left for things to happen. There is no hurry. They [Tevez and Jovetic] are both great players but they are also with great clubs, so it would not be right to discuss them. I do not want to create an illusion that things are already in motion,” said the Juventus general director. The club are also linked with a move for the 29-year-old striker Carlos Tevez.
